A staff member from Clan Orkney will be available within the MacMillian ward on the first Monday of every month from 10am to 12pm starting Monday June 1, offering a listening ear and support to those impacted by a cancer diagnosis and their loved ones.
Based within the ward’s sitting room area, the new initiative aims to raise awareness of Clan’s services and make support more accessible for people attending appointments and receiving treatment, and their loved ones.
Karen Farquhar, Clan’s Orkney area service coordinator said: “We know that many people attending hospital appointments may not always be aware of the support available within their community. By having a regular presence within the MacMillian ward, we hope to make it easier for people to access our services.
“Whether someone is newly diagnosed, caring for a loved one, undergoing treatment or living with grief, our team will be there to listen and help people access the support that is right for them.”
The new offering will begin with an initial trial, with a view to build on this presence over time if successful. The charity will also work alongside hospital teams to highlight the wider support available through its services.
Clan Cancer Support provides free physical and emotional support to anyone impacted by cancer, with services including emotional support and counselling, NHS aligned complementary therapies, children and family services and a dedicated hospital transport servicebetween Clan’s accommodation and Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.
Clan’s Orkney centre is based at 30 Victoria Street in Kirkwall and is open from Monday to Thursday from 10am – 4pm.
