About Clan

Working across the North of Scotland, we help people of all ages and with all types of cancer to navigate their diagnosis by giving them the tools to build resilience and improve their emotional and physical wellbeing.

For 40+ years, our charity has provided emotional and practical support to people affected by cancer across North East Scotland, Moray, Orkney and Shetland. We offer our clients, their families and loved ones a relaxed, welcoming and caring environment at Clan House — our purpose-built support and wellbeing centre in Aberdeen — and at our many bases in the wider community.

Clan’s wellbeing centres are non-medical environments, run by a fully qualified team focused on providing a safe and confidential space for clients. We are a key partner of the NHS and provide credible services — including NHS aligned complementary therapies — to support anyone undergoing medical treatments for cancer.

As an active member of the North Cancer Alliance and the Scottish Cancer Coalition, Clan also lobbies local and national government and NHS leads to inform and progress cancer care nationally and ensure patient wellbeing is prioritised throughout all stages of a diagnosis.

Our History

Clan Founded

Clan was founded in 1983 by a group of patients, health professionals and family members who were determined to improve cancer support services across Aberdeen and the north-east of Scotland.

Originally ‘Cancer Link Aberdeen & North’, the charity established itself with monthly meetings at an office that was gifted to us, on Albyn Place in Aberdeen. These gatherings enabled people to talk about their cancer journey and how it was impacting them and their loved ones, with the charity on hand to provide vital listening support services.

Our History

First Office

The charity’s first permanent office base was on Justice Mill Lane in Aberdeen, with its first employee, Freda Main, travelling across Aberdeen, Moray, Orkney and Shetland using the ‘Clan Van’ to deliver information and support services to people impacted by a cancer diagnosis.

Our History

Move to Clan House

We moved to our purpose-build support and wellbeing centre Clan House on Westburn Road, Aberdeen, in November 2011.

With six therapy rooms, three counselling rooms, 27 accommodation rooms and parking space for 48 cars, this new facility represented a huge step forward for Clan Cancer Support and our ability to support more people than ever before, within a short drive from Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.

Awards & Accreditations

Clan is the proud recipient of several awards given in recognition of the work we do throughout our local communities during the past 35 years. We are grateful for this recognition not only from the business community but also from the general public and our third sector colleagues.

Our People

Clan is the longest standing commercially independent cancer support charity in the north of Scotland, with all services sustained entirely by fundraising and the time and effort of our fantastic teams. Our people are our greatest asset.

While our roles are varied and numerous, everyone at Clan is here to provide practical and emotional support to people affected by cancer. From our wellbeing teams, to our drivers, to our emotional support and counselling staff and volunteers, our charity is fortunate to have such skilled, kind and dedicated people available to support clients.

Our People

Your story matters

Having been a paramedic, the most important thing I was told to have in my kit was a blanket.  This is because no matter what, putting a blanket around someone makes them feel like you've got them.  This is what Clan has been for me.

I joined Clan as my wife passed away three years ago and she loved going to Clan.

Everyone was so nice and helpful, and it took her mind of cancer for a few hours. And all the therapies she received helped as well. So I decided to help Clan as a driver, support worker, and also a fundraiser.

- Fundraiser

A friend suggested visiting Clan for a bit of extra support from people who truly understand the ongoing impact a cancer diagnosis has. Many of the volunteers there have experienced it themselves. They know it’s not just dealing with surgery and treatment. They know that it takes time to come to terms with a challenging new reality. And they know the things that can help people to cope.

For some people that comes with meeting people in a similar emotional or psychological place. For some it comes with having someone to talk to. For others it comes in different ways. For me, I realised that the alternative therapies offered by Clan might help me with things like sleep and pain management. There are various different alternative therapies available and after talking to one of the wonderful volunteers, we thought Reiki might be the best option for me.

I have now had three sessions of Reiki and can honestly say it’s been transformative. I have no idea how it works (I don’t know how the internal combustion engine works either but that that doesn’t stop me driving!) but it has genuinely made a huge difference. My sleep has improved, the pain is now a side show instead of the main event, I enjoy food again, I have more energy and I’m looking forward to life instead of feeling anxious about what might lie ahead. Remarkable after only 3 sessions!

I am truly grateful for the surgery that saved my life. And I’m just as grateful for the Reiki that has helped to give back my quality of life.
