Urgent Call For CLAN Volunteers To Support Cancer Support Services

CLAN Cancer Support is appealing to anyone who may be looking for a new challenge to get in touch with the charity as it looks to grow its team of support volunteers who assist in the centre, as well as event and fundraising volunteers to support events across the area. The charity is also seeking volunteers to assist in its busy charity shop at 39 Commercial Road, Lerwick.

CLAN has seen an increased need for the cancer support and wellbeing services it provides, free of charge, to anyone affected by cancer throughout Shetland. This includes providing support and information, wellbeing services and dedicated support for children, teenagers and families who are affected by a cancer diagnosis.

A strong network of volunteers has played a crucial role in the growth of the charity’s base, and the charity is now appealing to individuals who may be looking for a fresh challenge to get in touch to find out more about volunteering opportunities with the organisation. Lynda has been volunteering with CLAN Shetland since 2011 and is urging people to think about donating their time to CLAN as a volunteer.

Lynda said: “Like many people, I have been touched by cancer through friends and family, and to be able to give my time to help and support local people, and really feel that you are making a difference to someone is very special. Since I started volunteering, CLAN has supported me and allowed me to develop my role, using my existing skills and experience to help our clients.

Dana Millarkie, CLAN’s Shetland area coordinator, said: “Volunteers are essential part of CLAN and we are very grateful to those who continue to donate their time to the charity. They play a very important role and are essential in helping CLAN to provide a wide range of services, free of charge, to anyone affected by cancer.

“No matter how much time you can give, or what skills you can bring, CLAN can offer a rewarding volunteering experience which is perfect for those looking for a new challenge, whilst giving something back to the local community.

“I would urge anyone who would like to find out more to get in touch, even for an informal chat about how their time could make a real difference to CLAN and the people we support. By increasing our pool of dedicated volunteers, we can ensure that crucial cancer wellbeing and support services are here, in the heart of the community, when people need us the most.”
