We're launching our first-ever virtual fundraising walk. My CLAN Walk builds upon the success of the charity's annual CLAN Walk and encourages people to walk to raise funds for CLAN throughout August.
CLAN was forced to postpone the CLAN Walk this year due to the Coronavirus outbreak, along with many other events, but were determined to bring this popular event online. Participants are encouraged to sign up now and put their best foot forward, whether it's 1 mile or 100 miles!
Ross Sangster, who sadly lost his mum Amanda to cancer nearly six years ago has signed up and is walking in her memory: "When I first heard about My CLAN Walk, I was desperate to sign up! Since my mum passed away, together with my brother Fraser and my dad Mike, I have taken part in the CLAN Walk every year, and with all that's happened over the last few months, it's more important than ever to support CLAN. CLAN is a fantastic charity that did so much for my mum and I that is why I am challenging myself to walk 100 miles!"
Steph McCann, CLAN's Fundraising Team Manager, said: "My CLAN Walk offers you the opportunity to get outdoors either on your own, or with your family and friends. You choose the route, the mileage and the timeframe. It is your walk, your way.
"The CLAN Walk is our biggest event of the year with over 300 people taking part and a team of over 50 volunteers, but due to social distancing and the timing of the pandemic, we've had to postpone this year's physical walk. That is why we have moved online and encouraging people to host their own walk throughout August. CLAN covers the whole of the north-east and Northern Isles, so it's always been our ambition to get all of the communities we serve walking together in aid of CLAN."
CLAN has seen a significant drop in income since the beginning of the outbreak while facing a high demand for their cancer support services.
Steph continued: "Our team did a fantastic job of moving our services online when we closed our centres due to the outbreak. We have set up a telephone support service, professional telephone counselling, introduced new online services and continued to support our younger clients and their families. Over the last 14 weeks, we've given over 1,000 telephone support sessions, 400 counselling sessions and 500 children and family support sessions.
"That is why it is so important for CLAN to continue to be here for people facing a cancer diagnosis, and we hope that people will get involved with My CLAN Walk and help us to reach and support even more people."
My CLAN Walk takes place from 1st August to 4th September, registration is free and you can sign up by visiting www.clanhouse.org
