CLAN Cancer Support is marking Volunteers’ Week by issuing a fresh appeal for volunteers across its community bases.

With 11 community bases throughout north-east Scotland, Moray, Orkney and Shetland, CLAN has built a strong foundation of volunteers across the area which cover a number of roles including support, events, fundraising and shop volunteers.

Volunteers’ Week is an annual event which takes place at the start of June and celebrates the contribution made by millions of volunteers across the UK. Organised by NCVO in partnership with Volunteer Development Scotland, the week aims to showcase different volunteer roles on offer, taster sessions, recruitment events and award ceremonies for those already offering their help.

One such volunteer who has already put her name forward to help CLAN is Moray woman Angela Phillips. Angela trained to become a support volunteer with the charity in 2014 and has been a part of its growth in Elgin, volunteering from its base on the town’s High Street. Providing a range of listening support and advice to clients, she’s found the role to be a rewarding one.

Angela said: “I first heard about volunteering opportunities at CLAN through a friend and I immediately thought it would be something that I would like to do. I contacted the charity, started my training and really haven’t looked back since.

“To be able to be there for someone who is affected by cancer is so rewarding and I am of firm belief that volunteering with charities such as CLAN has a vital role to play in today’s society. To be able to give someone comfort and support is incredibly important and I enjoy seeing the difference that just talking and listening can have on an individual.”

Lucy Whiteman, CLAN’s services manager, said: “CLAN’s volunteers have always been integral to the success of the charity as a whole and with Volunteers’ Week currently underway, we’re looking to add to our team across the various areas that the charity operates within.

“There are various openings for volunteers throughout CLAN and we’re looking to speak to those interested in giving some of their spare time to get involved. We’re keen to hear from anyone who thinks they may have skills that are transferable to the charity.”

CLAN Cancer Support is an independent charity which provides comfort, support and information, free of charge, for anyone, of any age, affected by any type of cancer. CLAN aims to support people to reduce anxiety, stress and to increase their ability to cope with the effects of a serious illness.

Based in Aberdeen, the charity covers the whole of north-east Scotland, Moray, Orkney and Shetland. CLAN has a presence in Ballater, Banchory, Elgin, Inverurie, Fraserburgh, Lossiemouth, Peterhead, Stonehaven, Turriff, Kirkwall and Lerwick.

All CLAN volunteers have access to support, full training and ongoing development opportunities.
