CLAN Cavalcade Starts its Engines for CLAN
A cavalcade of vintage and classic cars has made its way through Moray and Aberdeenshire in support of a leading north-east cancer charity.
The third annual CLAN Cancer Support Cavalcade took place yesterday (Friday, July 29) and saw a fleet of motor vehicles, including a 1997 Ferrari, a 1962 Hillman Minx and a 1978 MGB Roaster amongst others, leave from Elgin to help raise both awareness and funds for the popular charity.
Taking in a number of CLAN’s support and wellbeing centres throughout the north-east, the cavalcade snaked its way south, stopping first at CLAN’s base in Turriff before driving onwards to Balmoral Castle in the heart of Royal Deeside for a pit stop and photo opportunity. From there, the convoy took the scenic route through Tomintoul before visiting CLAN in Ballater and then heading back to Elgin.
This year’s event was in honour of Ron Billing, the driving force of the previous two years, who sadly passed away earlier this year.
A keen member of Moray Historic Wheels and a support volunteer for CLAN in Elgin, Ron was responsible for the event’s inception and played an instrumental role in it becoming firmly established in the charity’s fundraising calendar. Ron’s widow Mary was on-hand to wave the cavalcade off from Elgin along with Grenville Johnston, Lord Lieutenant of Moray.
Tracy Sellar, CLAN’s Moray services co-ordinator, said: “The CLAN Cavalcade has been growing in size for the last two years and we were delighted to welcome so many car enthusiasts to this year’s event; it was quite the sight to see the fleet leave Elgin and make its way south all in support of CLAN.
“The event has an important role in raising funds for CLAN but it also helps shine a spotlight on many of our regional support and wellbeing centres. CLAN supports people affected by cancer across the north and north-east of Scotland and it’s great to give those taking part in the cavalcade event an insight into the scope and geographical location of its offering.
“I’d also like to thank those who came together on the day to show their support for CLAN. I’m sure Ron would have taken great pride in the turnout and seeing so many people give up their time to do their bit for a charity that was very close to his heart.”
