Orkney woman celebrates mini win
An Orkney resident has started the New Year in style after scooping a brand new Mini in a popular fundraiser for a leading north-east cancer support charity.
CLAN Cancer Support and 21 north-east Rotary clubs ensured 2015 would be a year to remember for Rose Rendall after her lucky number was pulled out of a raffle drawn at the Bon Accord and St Nicholas centre on Christmas Eve.
Rose won a shiny new Mini One Clubman, donated by international energy company TAQA, in the annual raffle, which is an integral part of the charity’s fundraising campaign. Thanks to the generosity of the public across the north-east, Moray, Orkney and Shetland, every penny raised will go towards CLAN’s provision of free support services for anyone affected by cancer.
A grand total of £38,000 was raised for CLAN through this year’s raffle and the win came at a fortuitous time for Rose as her family had been contemplating whether to buy a second car.
“I felt disbelief when I found out that I had won it. It was such a surprise and also meant the decision of getting another car was taken out of our hands. I bought my ticket while staying at CLAN Haven with my uncle, who was undergoing treatment at the time,” she said.
“It was his first visit there and it certainly is an amazing place if you ever have to go through what we have. It is a bit of a home from home when you need it the most. My uncle is well at the moment and he was delighted when he found out about the Mini. I have never won anything in a raffle before so it has been amazing.”
Susan Crighton, CLAN’s fundraising manager, said: “We are all delighted for Rose. Her win was made all the more poignant by her family’s link to CLAN Haven. We hope she has many happy moments in her new Mini.
“We are very grateful to TAQA for their continued sponsorship of the car, which means so much to us as the raffle is a hugely important fundraising event for us which has always been very generously supported by people across all the areas that CLAN has a presence within. We would like to thank the members of the 21 local Rotary clubs for running the raffle to support CLAN and everyone that bought a ticket who helped us raise such a tremendous amount.”
Alan Pirie, of the Aberdeen and North East Rotary Clubs, said: “It was a pleasure to link up with CLAN Cancer Support again and we would like to congratulate Rose on winning the Mini. Our members were on hand to help sell raffle tickets at various events throughout the north-east from Easter onwards ending up with 40 days at the Bon Accord and St Nicholas Centre from mid-November. It is wonderful to see the prize go to someone whose family has experienced the difference that CLAN’s services make to anyone affected by cancer.”
