Oncology expert joins CLAN board
CLAN Cancer Support is delighted to announce a significant new appointment to its board of directors.
Professor Marianne Nicolson MD BSc MB ChB FRCP brings over 25 years of expertise in oncology to the charity, having recently retired as a consultant medical oncologist at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.
A clinical specialist, well published researcher and lecturer in cancer, Professor Nicolson has received several accolades including two lifetime awards in 2018 - the British Thoracic Oncology Group Lifetime Achievement Award and the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award.
The CLAN board is responsible for the continuing development of support services offered by the charity, with each member of the board contributing with their own professional and personal expertise and knowledge.
Originally from Morayshire, Professor Nicolson graduated from Edinburgh University medical school and completed specialist training at the Royal Marsden Hospital and The Institute of Cancer Research in London where her MD thesis was in cancer drug development. She continues to lecture in the UK and beyond as well as advising on cancer grant committees and clinical trials groups.
Professor Nicolson said: “While a consultant oncologist at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, I was impressed with the support and benefits that many of my patients enjoyed through attending CLAN. It is my pleasure and privilege to become a member of the Board of this charity that offers so much to people throughout the north-east of Scotland.’

“Professor Nicolson’s extensive history of cancer treatment and her expertise in the field of cancer research will be of significant help to the board and the organisation as a whole.
“Our board members all give their time and expertise freely, for which we are very grateful, and I am looking forward to working closely with Marianne and utilising her skills and experience to ensure that CLAN continues to lead the way in cancer support services across the north-east, Orkney and Shetland.”
CLAN Cancer Support’s board currently consists of 12 members, with all board members giving their time and working closely with CLAN’s management team on a voluntary basis to ensure the charity’s ongoing success.
CLAN Cancer Support is an independent charity which provides comfort, support and information, free of charge, for anyone, of any age, affected by any type of cancer. CLAN aims to support people to reduce anxiety, stress and to increase their ability to cope with the effects of a serious illness.
Based in Aberdeen, the charity covers the north-east Scotland, Moray, Orkney and Shetland. CLAN has a presence in Ballater, Banchory, Elgin, Buckie, Crimond, Inverurie, Lossiemouth, Turriff, Kirkwall and Lerwick.
