Eat well workshops on the menu in Lerwick

CLAN Cancer Support is to reinforce the importance of eating well with a series of workshops in Lerwick.

Working in partnership with NHS Shetland Health Improvement Department, CLAN has arranged a three-month programme of workshops within its wellbeing centre on St Magnus Street in Lerwick.

Led by nutritionist and health improvement practitioner Nicola Balfour, the interactive sessions will be held twice a week on Wednesday mornings and Friday afternoons and will give attendees the chance to learn about how healthy eating can help support recovery and wellbeing during diagnosis.

Cooking demonstrations, recipe tasting, food labelling, budgeting and details on a national weight management programme entitled ‘Counterweight’, will all feature within the sessions, with the next workshops taking place on Wednesday, November 26, from 10.30am to 11.30am and Friday, November 28, from 12.30pm to 1.30pm.

Each eat well programme can be tailored to suit a specific individual’s needs and for those who can’t attend one of the arranged sessions, individual appointments can also be made with Nicola.

Lucy Whiteman, CLAN’s services manager, said: “The feedback we received from our recent community forums in Shetland identified a need for the development of our services and wellbeing activities we currently provide on the island.

“The eat well workshops are a new development for CLAN in Shetland and it is one that we’re looking forward to providing over the coming weeks.

“We’re delighted to be working with NHS Shetland in hosting this series of eat well workshops which really aim to give people an insight into how beneficial healthy eating can be throughout the various stages of cancer diagnosis and treatment.

“The sessions are very much open to anyone affected by cancer and promise to be engaging and informative, with lots of hints, tips, help and advice on offer for those interested in hearing how healthy eating may be able to help them.”
