CLAN Shetland Launches New Support Groups In Lerwick

Shetland

A leading cancer support charity has introduced new weekly wellbeing groups in Shetland which aim to support people affected by cancer in a relaxed and friendly environment.

CLAN Cancer Support has launched two new groups, a Craft Group and a Men’s Support Group, which will take place at its Lerwick base, 20a St. Magnus Street each Monday from 5th March.

The Craft Group will provide a space for people affected by cancer to come together, enjoy an existing skill, or take up a new hobby, whilst meeting with others who have been affected by cancer.

Those attending the men’s support group will also have the opportunity to meet other men who have been affected by cancer, enjoy social activities and hear from guest speakers.

Dorothy Jamieson, CLAN Cancer Support’s Wellbeing Centre Manager for Shetland, said: “We’re delighted to be opening our centre doors on a Monday to support these two new support groups. These groups have been requested by local people and we hope the groups will bring people together and allow greater access to advice and support for people affected by cancer”

“As the Men’s Group develops we will be inviting guest speakers to join the group and offering a range of optional activities. The Craft Group will give people the opportunity to develop a craft they may already be working on or develop a new skill and share their hobby with others. Both groups will also give clients the opportunity to access the support of the group in a relaxed, informal atmosphere. I would like the groups to develop from the ideas that the members share with us so please bring suggestions with you and we’ll do our best to meet your requests.”

“Our support centre shall also be open for drop-in on Mondays as of 5th March from 10am-4pm. No appointment is required, you are welcome to come along for a cuppa and a chat anytime during these hours.”

The craft group will run from 10.30am to 12.30pm each Monday and the men’s group will run on the same day from 1.30pm to 3.30pm. No bookings are required for either of the groups or the drop-in.

CLAN Shetland offers a drop-in service, for anyone affected by a cancer diagnosis, at its base in 20a St.Magnus Street, Lerwick from 10am-4pm on a Monday, Wednesday and Friday. No prior booking is required.

Dorothy commented: “CLAN’s services are here for anyone affected by cancer, whether that may be the person with the diagnosis, a family member, carer or close friend. As we develop our services throughout Shetland, we are keen to hear your suggestions.”
