CLAN Encourages People To Reap The Benefits Of Singing

A leading north-east cancer support charity is launching a new singing and music group for people affected by cancer.

CLAN Cancer Support’s new wellbeing group ‘CLAN Sing’ will begin in January and aims to bring the benefits of singing and music to anyone, of any age, who has been affected by a cancer diagnosis.

The group has been set up thanks to the generosity of a longstanding donor who previously donated a mini grand piano to the charity, which now sits in the CLAN House conservatory and is often used by clients and visitors.

CLAN Cancer Support’s Children and Families Support Worker, Leigh Ryrie, who has taken inspiration from musical groups she has been involved in to set up the group, hopes that people whether musical or not, will come along and find out the benefits of music for themselves.

She said: “CLAN Sing is open to anyone. Whether you would like to try something new or may have enjoyed singing in the past, this friendly and relaxed group will give people the opportunity to meet like-minded individuals who may be in a similar situation.

“Anyone who has been affected by a cancer diagnosis is welcome to attend, and if singing isn’t for you there will be a range of percussion instruments available ensuring everyone can get involved.”

CLAN Cancer Support Chief Executive, Dr Colette Backwell, added: “The health and wellbeing benefits of music have been well documented and singing is a great way to release tension and combat stress.

“Although CLAN Sing will run in 8 week blocks, the group will work with different music each week meaning if someone has to miss a week due to family commitments or treatment, for example, they can still come along the following week and join in.

“We are looking forward to hearing CLAN House filled with music and laughter over the coming weeks.”

CLAN Sing begins on Friday, 12th January and will take place between 1pm – 2pm at CLAN House, Westburn Road, Aberdeen each Friday. To register your interest or find out more please phone 01224 647 000 or email leigh.ryrie@clanhouse.org.
