CLAN announces new appointment in Shetland

CLAN Cancer Support has welcomed a new support services and fundraising co-ordinator to its team in Shetland as it enters 2014 with a recruitment drive to attract new volunteers.

CLAN has appointed local woman Thelma Hughson to the role where she will be responsible for overseeing a number of fundraising events across the island as well playing an integral part in allowing the people of Shetland to continue to have access to the range of free cancer support services that the charity offers.

Thelma has extensive experience of working in care and community based projects in Shetland and helped establish the island’s first care at home service in a previous role with the Shetland Welfare Trust. She has also held senior positions on the Shetland Children’s Panel and is currently working towards an honours degree in Social Science with the Open University.

CLAN CEO Debbie Thomson welcomed her appointment. She said: “ Thelma’s appointment very much reflects our desire to develop our services and opening times within the island.

“Our services and fundraising activity really are at the heart of the work that is undertaken in this area and I’m delighted to welcome Thelma to the role; I have no doubt that she will be a valuable addition to the team.”

Thelma added: “CLAN has an established presence in Shetland, providing free cancer support services to people across the island and I’m looking forward to playing my part in the continuation of this help.

“I’ve always worked within care and community based projects and have actively fundraised for charity for a number of years. I hope to develop the skills and qualities I gained within these projects further at CLAN and I’m delighted to be given the opportunity to work with an organisation that makes a real difference to the lives of so many people.”

The charity, which was recently awarded with the Volunteer Friendly Award as recognition of best practice in working with volunteers, is also looking to increase its pool of support personnel within the area and will hold interviews with those interested in becoming involved with the charity on Saturday, January 25 in Lerwick.

With the drop-in centre in Lerwick open on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays, the charity is looking for people to help with the host of activities that the facility provides on a weekly basis.

Anyone interested in support volunteering is encouraged to contact Thelma Hughson on 01595 720320 or email thelma.hughson@clanhouse.org
