Centrica Energy gives backing to CLAN Cancer Support

A leading UK oil and gas exploration and production company has donated £25,000 to CLAN thanks to an innovative car parking initiative.

Centrica Energy selected CLAN Cancer Support as its chosen charity of the year in Aberdeen after a vote among its 400 city-based employees.

Since the start of the year, staff have been raising money for CLAN through various events including bake sales and cinema nights, with a host of further fundraisers planned for the remainder of 2015. CLAN chief executive Debbie Thomson has also met with staff to share her experiences of working with the charity and given an insight into the work of the organisation.

The company’s £25,000 donation is a result of a unique match funding scheme relating to employee car parking at its Justice Mill Lane offices. All employees who use a car park space pay £25 per month to a charity of their choice and these donations have been matched by Centrica Energy, with all of the company’s funds going directly to CLAN.

The money donated by Centrica Energy will go towards CLAN’s provision of free support services to anyone affected by cancer throughout the north-east of Scotland, Moray, Orkney and Shetland.

Colette Cohen, Centrica Energy’s senior vice-president for the UK and the Netherlands, said: “Centrica Energy has a close affinity with Aberdeen and the north-east, and we were delighted when staff chose the local charity CLAN as our charity of the year.

“With events planned throughout 2015, everyone at Centrica is looking forward to raising more funds for CLAN and further developing our relationship. It was great to be able to kick things off with this large donation.”

Debbie Thomson, CLAN chief executive, said: “We were thrilled to be named Centrica Energy’s nominated charity for 2015 and I’d like to thank its staff for selecting CLAN. To be the recipient of their efforts throughout the year will be a massive support to everyone associated with the charity and I can’t thank them enough for what they have already done for us this year.

“The £25,000 donation from the car park scheme is incredibly generous and one that we are delighted to receive. Centrica Energy’s car park initiative is a fantastic example of how a company and its staff can get involved with a campaign in support of various good causes and it’s great to be a part of its efforts.”
