200 Trekkers take to Deeside for CLAN Cancer Support

Led by local pipers, and all sporting a flash of tartan, more than 200 people took to the tracks of Balmoral Estate on Saturday, May 12, on the third annual Tartan Trek, to raise awareness of and support a North-east cancer support charity.

Walkers of all ages completed either a 6km or 15km walk through the grounds of Balmoral Castle taking in the stunning scenery whilst enjoying one of the nicer days of Spring to date.

Walkers were rewarded by the Royal Lochnagar distillery with a dram of whisky, and all could enjoy a variety of home-bakes and tea in the refreshment marquee.

Volunteer organisers from Deeside and Donside were delighted with the support the Trek received in aid of CLAN Cancer Support.

Participants of all fitness levels took part in the event, which aims to bring people together to enjoy the great outdoors, and to show that gentle exercise can be beneficial to many of CLAN’s clients, while also raising awareness, and funds, for the Aberdeen-based charity.

One group of walkers included Stephen Venables - the first Briton to climb Everest without oxygen - and several other notable climbers. This entire group, like many of the other walkers, had been in some way affected by cancer.

Participants paid a registration fee, and many also chose to take the opportunity to collect sponsorship, resulting in around £4,000 has being raised. Amongst many of the young walkers, Callum Clark of Alford, who is 10 years old, raised over £170 on his own.

Susan Crighton, fundraising manager at CLAN Cancer Support, said: “I am extremely pleased to hear the Tartan Trek was such a success.

“The annual event continues to grow in popularity, as does the fantastic support we have within the Deeside area both from individuals and businesses.

“We are extremely grateful to everyone who gives up their time to support and organise a huge variety of events for CLAN. This support allows us to continue to provide clients with the wide range of services we provide both at CLAN House and our various outreach centres.”

CLAN is an independent charity which offers support to anyone affected by cancer. Based in Aberdeen, the charity covers the whole of Grampian, Orkney and Shetland.
