CLAN marks the first milestone on new build site

CLAN Cancer Support has marked an important landmark at the site of its new centre.

Debbie Thomson, chief executive of CLAN, has today (04 November) cut the first soil during a short ceremony at the site of CLAN Cancer Support’s new purpose-designed base in the heart of the city.

Construction, undertaken by Morrison Construction Limited, is now underway at the site, on Westburn Road, Aberdeen, with building work predicted to take around a year.

The new multi million pound facility is a huge milestone for the charity, which will be moving from its current base at Caroline Place, the charity’s home for more than 14 years. The move will allow CLAN to greatly expand its range of services as well as being able to cater for more clients than was previously possible.

The new site, which extends to around 1.16 acres, will see the charity build a two storey centre, featuring specific areas for children, families and relaxation as well as extra parking and outdoor space for visitors to enjoy.

The centre will also house 27 bedrooms, a significant increase in the number of rooms at the charity’s current CLAN Haven facility, which is available for people, and their families, travelling to Aberdeen for treatment or appointments at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.

Debbie Thomson, chief executive of CLAN, is delighted to be able to mark such an important moment for the charity. She said: “Over the past two years we have had the most overwhelming support from the community – stretching from Orkney and Shetland to across the North-east – with communities, individuals and organisations all taking part in the most amazing fundraising efforts.

“It is thanks to Aberdeen City Council as well as these dedicated supporters that we find ourselves in the position of being able to start work on our long awaited cancer support centre.

“The new building will give us the chance to continue to expand the range of services we can offer and, in terms of our therapies, we will be able to offer appointments within a much shorter period of time.

“We are focused on creating a home from home for all our clients and guests. We only have one chance to get this right for everyone coming to CLAN in the future so we are committed to ensuring that our new centre is as warm and welcoming as we can make it for everyone who walks through our doors.

“We have been touched by the response we have received for the project over the past two years and would encourage people to continue to fundraise on our behalf as we aim to make our centre the best possible source of comfort and support that we can.”

Commenting on the new work, Mike Bruce, operations director for Morrison Construction’s North-east business, said: “This is an inspiring and exciting project to be working on. Morrison is delighted to be involved in the construction of this facility which will aid all those affected by cancer within the North east of Scotland”.

Lord Provost Peter Stephen said: “I am delighted to see this significant project forging ahead. The support that CLAN provides to families affected by cancer is invaluable – I cannot praise this charity enough.

“Everybody involved in getting this project off the ground deserves the highest accolade. I very much look forward to visiting the building when it opens.”

CLAN Cancer Support is an independent charity which offers support to anyone affected by cancer. Based in Aberdeen, the charity covers the whole of Grampian, Orkney and Shetland. CLAN is also developing services in the community and now has a presence in Ballater, Inverurie, Peterhead, Stonehaven, Orkney and Shetland.
