Clan Cancer Support is extending opening hours at its Orkney centre in a bid to reach more people impacted by a cancer diagnosis.
The charity, which is based at 30 Victoria Street in Kirkwall, is opening from 6pm-8pm on the last Thursday of each month to increase the accessibility of its services.
Clan offers listening support, complementary therapies, children and family services and cancer support groups for people going through a cancer diagnosis and their loved ones.
In addition to the monthly late night, the centre is open from 10am until 4pm from Monday to Thursday with clients able to make an appointment or simply drop in for support.
Karen Farquhar, Clan’s Orkney area service coordinator said: “We’ve been conscious of a need to make our face-to-face services more flexible and accessible as we know it's not always practical for people to come to Clan during the working day.
“Whilst we have digital services available, we know that sometimes there is no substitute for in-person support. These extended hours will allow our team in Orkney to reach more people who could benefit from a listening ear to ease the emotional effects that can be associated with a cancer journey.”
Clan has been providing cancer support services in Orkney for 17 years and also provides support to Orcadians travelling to Aberdeen for specialist care from its accommodation based just minutes from Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.
The charity also offers dedicated support groups for both men and women impacted by cancer, whether through their own diagnosis or by the diagnosis of a loved one.
The men’s support group meets on the third Tuesday of every month from 10:30am-12:30pm at the Orkney wellbeing centre.
Similarly, the women’s support group takes place on the first Thursday of each month from 10:30am-12:30pm at the same location.
Both support groups aim to create a safe and supportive space where individuals can share experiences, reduce feelings of isolation, and promote overall wellbeing.
