CLAN counts down to 30th Anniversary
Three decades of dedication to providing cancer support will be recognised tomorrow (Wednesday September 25) when Aberdeen City Council hosts a civic reception for a leading charity.
CLAN Cancer Support, which marks its 30th anniversary Wednesday, September 25, 2013, will be the centre of attention at the Town House as the special occasion is toasted by Lord Provost George Adam and invited guests.
Mr Adam said: “There can be few people in Aberdeen who have not been touched by the wonderful work done by CLAN over the past three decades and we’re delighted to be able to show our appreciation.
“Already in September, our Marischal College headquarters has been illuminated to join the Go Purple for CLAN campaign – but the civic reception is a more traditional way of recognising the tireless work of the employees, volunteers and supporters who have made the charity such a valuable part of our community. The 30th anniversary is an occasion each one of those individuals can be very proud of.”
The charity was founded in 1983 by a group of passionate committee members who were determined to improve services across the region. Now it can call upon the services of just under 400 volunteers, employs the equivalent of 46 full-time staff and has 40 individuals contracted to provide services across a large geographic area. Following a £3million campaign in 2011 for its CLAN House headquarters in Aberdeen, the charity has further expanded to create facilities as far afield as Peterhead, Elgin and Ballater on the mainland as well as on Shetland and Orkney.
A programme of events throughout September has helped marked the occasion, with the Landmark Walk staged on Sunday (September 22) providing a fitting focal point as hundreds of fundraisers and supporters took to the streets of Aberdeen.
CLAN chief executive Debbie Thomson said: “The 30th anniversary falls on September 25 but the whole year has been wonderful from CLAN’s perspective. There has been so much goodwill towards the charity, with touching memories from the past three decades shared and some inspiring ambitions for the future of CLAN flourishing.
“The civic reception is very welcome indeed as an opportunity to reflect on the accomplishments of the past but also to look forward to the next stage in CLAN’s development.”
CLAN Cancer Support is an independent charity which provides comfort support and information, free of charge, for anyone, of any age, affected by any type of cancer. CLAN aims to support people to reduce anxiety, stress and to increase their ability to cope with the effects of a serious illness. Based in Aberdeen, the charity covers the whole of north-east Scotland, Moray, Orkney and Shetland. CLAN has a presence in Ballater, Banchory, Elgin, Inverurie, Fraserburgh, Peterhead, Stonehaven, Kirkwall and Lerwick.
