An Orkney businessman and Clan Cancer Support ambassador has received an MBE from King Charles for his services to fundraising and the community in Orkney.
Martin Flett from Kirkwall was awarded the honour of Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) at Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh earlier this month.
Over the past decade Martin has organised and participated in numerous fundraising events and challenges, helping to raise more than £130,000 for Clan Cancer Support.
The Managing Director of the Orkney based building contractor, Alfred Flett LTD has taken on cycling challenges and organised numerous golf days over the last ten years to raise the significant amount for the charity.
Martin, who was also named Orkney’s Local Hero in 2024, travelled with his wife Deirdre and their children Karin and Magnus to receive the award in Edinburgh.
He said: “It was an honour to receive my MBE at Holyroodhouse. It was a surreal experience made even more special by having the opportunity to talk to the King about the different fundraising activities I’ve completed.
“I’ve never expected any awards or recognition, I’ve always considered it a privilege to support Clan over the years and raise money and awareness for the vital services the charity provides on Orkney.”
Clan offers emotional and physical support for people of all ages who are impacted by a cancer diagnosis with the charity providing 760 drop-in sessions in Orkney over the last year and welcoming 111 new clients.
The charity has a further four wellbeing centres based in Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Moray and Shetland.
Karen Scott, Clan’s Cancer Support Services area manager (North Mainland & Isles), said: “It costs £2.6million every year to provide our services in the communities we support and as a completely commercially independent charity, we are so reliant on fundraisers, like Martin, to help us achieve this amount.
“Martin’s commitment to Clan is inspirational. He has made a huge contribution to our mission of providing emotional and physical support to anyone impacted by a cancer diagnosis. On behalf of everyone at Clan, I would like to thank him for his continuous backing over the years and congratulate him on this much deserved honour.”
