Young volunteer receives Saltire Award

A young volunteer who has contributed over 100 hours to a local leading cancer support charity has had her efforts recognised with a national accolade.

Sasha Potter, 17, has been presented with a Saltire Award in recognition of her volunteering in CLAN Cancer Support’s shop in Ballater. The youngster has been helping out on a Saturday in the shop and has given up 100 hours of her time to the charity.

The Saltire Award, supported by the Scottish Government, is a recognition programme designed for young people between 12-25 years engaged in volunteering in Scotland.

Jane Adams, volunteer co-ordinator at CLAN, said: “We’re delighted that Sasha chose to donate her time to CLAN and it’s a great example of the short term flexible volunteering opportunities we have available at the charity.

“We find that these types of placements are a great way for young people to gain new skills and practical experience through volunteering and we would welcome anyone who has some spare time to come forward and help CLAN continue to provide services for anyone affected by cancer across the north-east of Scotland.”

Val Cameron, development officer of volunteer centre Aberdeenshire South, the organisation responsible for the Saltire Award in north-east Scotland, said: “The Saltire Awards are designed to recognise the commitment and contribution made by youth volunteering.

“Aberdeenshire’s young people make an extremely positive contribution to their communities and it’s important that they get the recognition they deserve. We at Volunteer Centre Aberdeenshire are delighted to deliver the award to Sasha, who has contributed a fantastic 100 hours of volunteering at the CLAN shop in Ballater.”
