Stonehaven Man Scoops Rotary Raffle Star Prize
A north-east man has collected the keys to a Mini thanks to a popular annual fundraiser organised by 22 north-east Rotary Clubs.
Ken Reid, from Stonehaven, received a phone call on Christmas Eve telling him his winning ticket had been pulled during the draw made earlier that day in Aberdeen’s Bon Accord Centre.
The Rotary Clubs have been staging the raffle since 2000, with local cancer support charity, CLAN Cancer Support, being the beneficiary of this year’s funds.
Mr Reid said: “It was a lovely call to receive on Christmas Eve and I am glad I have had an opportunity to support both CLAN and the Rotary Clubs by taking part in this fantastic raffle.”
This year’s ticket sales raised £51,000, the majority of which goes to CLAN which provides information and support for people affected by cancer across north-east Scotland, Moray, Orkney and Shetland. The participating Rotary Clubs will share £14,000 to help support a variety of other charities of their choice in the area.
Alan Pirie, of the Aberdeen and North East Rotary Clubs, said: “I was delighted to join Ken and representatives from CLAN at CLAN House to officially present Ken with the keys for his Mini.
“The raffle continues to go from strength to strength with so much support from the public across the north-east who support it year after year. Of course, it wouldn’t be possible without the help and dedication of the 22 Rotary Clubs involved who help to sell raffle tickets at events and venues right throughout the north-east from Easter until Christmas Eve.”
Fiona Fernie, Head of Income Generation and Business Development at CLAN Cancer Support, said: “We were delighted to work with the Rotary Clubs during this year’s raffle and it is always a pleasure to see the Mini be handed over to its new owner.
“We cannot thank the Rotary clubs involved enough for their help, support and generosity over the years. CLAN has been extremely lucky to have been the beneficiary of the raffle on a number of occasions and we would like to thank everyone who purchased a ticket for this year’s draw.
"We would also like to thank the CLAN supporters and volunteers who helped to sell tickets at our wellbeing and support centres and numerous events throughout the year, along with local companies including Kore Solutions, Empire HR, Intellicore and Eyecandy for their sponsorship of this year’s Mini.”
CLAN Cancer Support is an independent charity which provides comfort, support and information, free of charge, for anyone, of any age, affected by any type of cancer. CLAN aims to support people to reduce anxiety, stress and to increase their ability to cope with the effects of a serious illness.
Based in Aberdeen, the charity covers the whole of north-east Scotland, Moray, Orkney and Shetland. CLAN has a presence in Ballater, Banchory, Elgin, Buckie, Inverurie, Fraserburgh, Lossiemouth, Peterhead, Turriff, Kirkwall and Lerwick.
