RGU students celebrate 30 years of CLAN Cancer Support

The following was issued by RGU: A group of 70 Robert Gordon University students have organised a roster of events to celebrate three decades of cancer support from local charity CLAN.

As part of their third year communication projects, the Communication with PR and Media students have taken on the challenge of organising and hosting a huge range of events to raise much needed funds for CLAN to celebrate its 30th anniversary.

The 70 students, separated into ten groups, have had just weeks to plan their own event, gain sponsorship and raise money for CLAN – the Aberdeen based charity that supports anyone affected by cancer as the patient, carer, friend or family member.

The students are aiming to raise £10,000 which will allow the charity to purchase a car.

CLAN has recently expanded its support services in North Aberdeenshire, and the purchase of a fully liveried car will enable CLAN’s local co-ordinator to cover the large geographical area whilst also raising CLAN’s profile.

Susan Crighton, CLAN Fundraising Manager said: “We are delighted that RGU has chosen CLAN as its nominated charity for this project.

“All ten teams were challenged to organise and implement an event which would raise funds and awareness of CLAN in our 30th Anniversary year – students have more than risen to that challenge.”

The events, which are being held in and around Aberdeen city and shire, include a training session with Aberdeen Football Club’s greatest and most memorable players called AFC Kicks 4 CLAN, a Fashion 360 event showcasing the changing fashion over the last three decades and a film festival bringing the top ten movies from the last 30 years back to the big screen.

The students have also organised a Hollywood inspired cocktail evening, a race night, Rockaoke, a Zumba session, casino night, a 5-a-side football tournament and a media cycle challenge which saw four teams from the local media battle it out at the Bon Accord Centre.

The events which have been taken place already have proved to be a success.

Fashion 360 – a fashion show which will showcase the vintage clothes and accessories from CLAN’s charity shops within a three decade theme – was held last night (Wednesday May 8) with a great turnout and .

AFC Kicks 4 CLAN will take place on May 10 at the Snowsports football field at Garthdee.

Zumba for the Future will be held at Aberdeen Sports Village on Wednesday May 15 and Football, Frosting and Fundraising the 5-a-side football tournament will also take place at the sports village on May 18.
