Orkney business donates Standing Stones to CLAN

An Orkney business has made a generous donation to a North-east charity, which will take pride of place at its new headquarters for all to see.

Orkney Aggregates Ltd has gifted Aberdeen-based charity CLAN Cancer Support with three traditional Orkney standing stones.

The donation, from Roy and Gillian Brown of Orkney Aggregates, has been shipped free of charge, courtesy of Streamline Shipping, to CLAN Cancer Support’s new home on Aberdeen’s Westburn Road .

Varying in height from just over five feet to around 10 ft; altogether the stones weigh 3.5 tons.

CLAN Cancer Support’s chief executive, Debbie Thomson, said: “Everyone is thrilled to see these impressive standing stones at the entrance to our new Centre.

“This was an incredibly generous gift and I would like to thank Roy and Gillian at Orkney Aggregates, as well as thanking Streamline Shipping Company who solved the problem of transporting the stones to us in Aberdeen. No-one who visits Orkney can fail to be impressed with the wonderful array of standing stones and with our established strong links to the islands these stones are a lasting symbol not only to the support we have received from the islanders but to us also signifies the triumphs of the human spirit.”

Visiting the new Centre Roy Brown said, “Wow! It’s great to see this impressive building which is so appropriate for its purpose. Our local community should be proud of their efforts to assist this project.”

CLAN’s new and larger bed and breakfast facility, CLAN Haven, has already seen an increase in the numbers of guests staying from Orkney. Since the new facility was opened in November there has been increase in those travelling down to Aberdeen either for radiotherapy treatment or to visit or accompany friends and family members undergoing treatment or tests in Aberdeen’s Royal Infirmary.

Based in Aberdeen, CLAN covers the whole of Grampian, Orkney and Shetland and also offers services in the community in Orkney, Shetland, Ballater, Inverurie, Peterhead, and Stonehaven.
